Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power rallied for a 10-9 extra inning win against the Lexington Legends on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. David Rubinstein scored on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Brito in the bottom of the tenth inning to send the Power home with their second walk-off win of the year.

The Legends scored twice in the first, tacked on four in the second, and added two more in the fourth to build an 8-1 advantage after four innings. J.D. Martinez had three hits and five runs batted in over the first four innings, including a home run in the second, while Jiovanni Mier, Rene Garcia, Miguel Arrendell, and Martinez accounted for two runs each during that stretch.

West Virginia's rally began in the sixth when the first five players reached on base hits. Ramon Cabrera delivered a double that brought in two to slice the deficit down to 8-3. After singles by Kyle Morgan and Bengie Gonzalez singles later, the Power trailed 8-5.

In the top of the eighth, Martinez hit his second home run of the game to recoup a run for a 9-5 edge. The outfielder went five for five and drove in six runs for the Legends, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.

The Power countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Gonzalez walked and Evan Chambers singled. With on out, David Rubinstein singled in a run and Aaron Baker doubled home one as well. Jose Hernandez followed with a ground ball to the left side of the infield and Baker, representing the tying run, was caught in a rundown. After Baker was tagged out, Hernandez was called out at second while trying to take an extra base on the play, ending the inning with a 9-8 score.

In the ninth, Cabrera and Morgan hit back-to-back doubles with one out. Cabrera scored on Morgan's hit to tie the game. The Power could not work the winning run across and Michael Schurz closed the frame with a strikeout, walk, and a strikeout.

After Zach Foster allowed two hits in the top of the tenth, West Virginia capitalized in the home half. Schurz hit Rubinstein with a pitch. Baker laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the Legends pitcher attempted to get the lead runner at second and his throw went into centerfield. Grant Hogue dropped the ball in center, thus allowing Rubinstein to take third and Baker to advance to second. After Hernandez was intentionally walked to load the bases with no one out, Brito drove the ball to deep right field for a sacrifice fly that brought home the winning run.

Foster (4-2) gained the win, while Schurz (0-2) took the loss. Every Power player had at least one hit, while seven of the nine drove in at least on run. West Virginia hitters also walked a season-high 11 times.

The Power and Legends continue this five-game set Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
