Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV): The West Virginia Power defeated the Asheville Tourists 6-5 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. The Power bullpen kept the game alive for West Virginia and Stetson Allie hit a walk-off home run to give the Power their first win of the season.
Asheville scored four runs in the second inning off West Virginia starter John Kuchno to make the score 4-0. West Virginia responded in the third as Walker Gourley hit a two-run double to left, scoring Francisco Diaz and Ashley Ponce. The Tourists responded in the next half inning by scoring one run after Tom Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 5-2 Asheville.
John Creasy, David Jagoditsh, and Pat Ludwig pitched in relief after Kuchno tossed three and one third innings allowing all five runs, four of which were earned. The three relievers combined for seven and two thirds innings, allowing no runs and only five hits.
The Power bats came alive again in the sixth inning when Eric Wood hit the first West Virginia home run. Ponce followed shortly after with an RBI single, scoring Raul Fortunato and cutting the Tourists' lead to one. West Virginia tied the game at five in the seventh on an RBI single by Allie. Each team had opportunities to take the lead in the ninth, but neither capitalized and the game went to extra innings. In the 11th, Allie hit a 1-1 pitch from Roberto Padilla over the short wall in right-center for the walk-off win.
Ludwig (1-0) earned the victory while Padilla (0-1) took the loss. The Power win snapped a three-game slid and prevented Asheville from sweeping the season-opening series.
West Virginia welcomes the Charleston Riverdogs to Appalachian Power Park for a three-game series. Tyler Glasnow makes his 2013 season debut against Charleston's Vincente Campos. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Power Record: 1-3
