Power defeats Kannapolis

(Kannapolis, NC) - The West Virginia Power defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 7-1 on Friday night at Intimidators Stadium. Austin Coley was stellar with seven innings of one-run ball and, with the victory, the Power evened up the season series against the Intimidators.

West Virginia took a lead for the second consecutive night in the second inning. With Jerrick Suiter and Elvis Escobar in scoring position, Taylor Gushue drove both men home with a single to right and it gave the Power a 2-0 lead.

The Power extended their lead to 4-0 with a two-run fourth. Michael Suchy scored the first run of the inning on a sac fly from Escobar. Suiter crossed home on an RBI double from Power first baseman Chase Simpson.

Kannapolis scored a run in the fifth inning against Coley to end his shutout bid but the Power scored two more times in the seventh to extend their lead to five. With Gushue and Tyler Filliben on base with two outs, Pablo Reyes collected is second double of the series to clear the bases and it gave West Virginia a 6-1 lead.

Gushue capped off his busy night with a one-out walk in the ninth inning and scored the final run on a fielder's choice and an error. The Power catcher finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Coley (16-5) earned the win after he retired each of the first ten batters he faced in his outing and, ultimately, worked seven innings. Coley's seven innings puts him at 147.2 during the regular season, the most in franchise history. The right-hander struck out five batters and passed Yovani Gallardo in the Power all-time franchise strikeouts list. Luis Martinez (4-14) suffered the loss.

West Virginia (47-20, 84-52) continues the series with Kannapolis (29-37, 64-71) on Saturday night at Intimidators Stadium. LHP Stephen Tarpley (11-4, 2.35) will pitch on Saturday for the Power opposite of Intimidators LHP Zack Erwin (0-2, 1.69). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. while pregame on Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 FM and 1490, the Power website, and the TuneIn Radio App is slated for 6:45 p.m.

The Power return to Appalachian Power Park for Game One of the South Atlantic League's Northern Division Championship Series against the Hickory Crawdads on Wednesday, September 9. General Admission tickets are free when acquired in advance while box seats are available for just $2 when purchased prior to September 9.
