Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Lexington, KY- April 24, 2016)- The West Virginia Power lost 11-10 to Lexington Legends on a walk-off wild pitch on Sunday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The Power held a 10-0 lead after three and a half innings, but the Legends rallied with a six-run sixth, three-run eighth and scored once in the bottom of the ninth to win the series finale and avoid a series sweep.
The Power took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first against Legends starting pitcher Corey Ray.Carlos Munoz drove in a pair with a single, Daniel Arribas plated one with a sac fly and Ryan Nagle drove in Munoz with a double to build the lead. During Nagle's double, Lexington left fielder Tanner Stanley crashed into the wall while trying to make a play. The game was delayed roughly 15 minutes as Stanley received medical attention. The outfielder was taken off the field in an ambulance.
In the third, West Virginia scored three times to extend the lead to 7-0 and added three more in the fourth. Tyler Filliben's two run home run give the Power a 10-0 lead.
Marten Gasparini's solo home run put the Legends on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Lexington scored six runs in the sixth inning to cut the West Virginia lead to three. The Legends sent 12 batters to the plate and walked six times, including two with the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lexington tied the game at 10 on a solo home run and a two-run double by Gasparini.
After the Power stranded two in scoring position in the top of the ninth, Ben Johnson doubled off Eric Karch. A sac bunt moved the winning run to third. With Cody Jones at the plate, Karch threw a wild pitch that allowed the winning run to cross.
Karch (0-1) was charged with a blown save and took the loss. Jacob Bodner (1-0) was the benefactor of the last four runs and earned the win. Five different Power players had at least two hits and Nagle's three runs batted in led all West Virginia players.
West Virginia still has the league's best record heading into an off day Monday. The Power will open a seven game homestand on Tuesday evening against the Rome Braves. Dario Agrazal will start the opener for West Virginia against Rome's Max Fried.
