Poulter Puts on Solid Performance in Bronco Crease Despite 4-1 Loss

October 13, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release

The Swift Current Broncos met the Spokane Chiefs for their one and only meeting of the regular season on Friday night and 16-year-old Swift Current netminder Isaac Poulter was terrific, making 44 saves despite a 4-1 loss.

The 16-year-old rookie backstopper was nothing short of terrific in the first period, denying 23 of 24 Spokane shots sent his way.

Eli Zummack was the only one who solved Poulter, having deflected one by him late in the opening frame and Spokane took that one goal margin into the first intermission.

The Chiefs' Tyson Feist went to the sin bin for a four-minute double minor high sticking penalty at the 2:37 mark of the second period, giving the Broncos a five-on-four advantage. Although they created several scoring chances, the home team couldn't get one by Chiefs goaltender Bailey Brkin and it remained 1-0 Spokane once the penalty ended.

Carter Chorney put Swift Current down 2-0 after tipping a shot off the stick from blue liner Matt Leduc. Shots were 34-20 in favour of Spokane through 40 minutes but the Broncos remained within reach in this game.

Spokane made it 3-0 as Jake McGrew scored his fifth goal of the season at the 11:26 mark.

The Broncos eventually solved Brkin as Noah King netted his first career WHL regular season goal. Max Patterson sauced over a perfect cross ice feed to King who smacked it by the outstretched pad of Brkin to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Swift Current pulled Poulter with 2:30 left in regulation in hopes of clicking for two more goals but Riley Woods tacked on an empty netter to make the final score 4-1 for Spokane.

Shots on goal were 48-29 in favour of Spokane. Both clubs finished 0/4 on their respective power play chances.

Swift Current hits the road immediately as they face off against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night at Westoba Place. Puck drop is set for 6:30pm CT.
