Wake Forest Baseball Park - Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Game #120/Road #64
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals wrap up their season series with the Southern Division First-Half champion Winston-Salem Dash from Wake Forest Baseball Park tonight with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The P-Nats remain in second place in the Northern Division as Wilmington has won three in a row and maintained their half game lead in the division following a 9-7 comeback win in Frederick. Winston-Salem meanwhile, is just .500 (25-25) since the break but are still looking to sweep both halves in the Southern Division as they hold a 1.0 game edge over Kinston.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Justin Edwards, 21, was selected in the 3rd round by the Chicago White Sox in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida. Edwards was 6-9 with a 5.79 ERA in 27G/21GS with Low-A Kannapolis in 2007 but missed all of the 2008 campaign when he underwent Tommy John Surgery. He began his comeback to the hill this year again with the Intimidators of the South Atlantic League and was 4-3 with a 3.80 ERA in eight starts including a seven inning shutout performance prior to his call-up to Winston-Salem in the third week of June. In his Carolina League debut on June 21 in Wilmington, Edwards held the Blue Rocks to just two earned runs on three hits in his 5.0 innings of work. In making that start, Edwards was the first left-hander to start a game for the Dash this season.
Edwards has alternated between effective and ineffective outings since joining the Dash rotation. Following the success from his debut, he was touched for eight runs (five earned) on seven hits including four home runs against the P-Nats on June 28. His performance after that was nearly flawless as the left-hander let up just a run on four hits in a victory over Lynchburg from City Stadium. Perhaps his best game yet took place in Salem when he baffled the Red Sox over a season-high 8.0 innings allowing just on run and not walking a single batter on July 16. In his next start on July 22, he allowed five runs in four and two-thirds frames against the last-place Kinston Indians. Of course, the southpaw bounced back by blanking Potomac over seven frames yielding just three hits from Pfitzner Stadium on August 1st. Edwards enters this start with a perfect record in August going 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA in his three starts including a victory in his last start against Frederick (6.0 IP, 1 ER, 3BB, 0K). His bug-a-boo this year has been pitching from Wake Forest Baseball Park where he is winless in four appearances having allowed 6 HR in just 16.2 IP as well as a 9.18 ERA.
