Postgame Recap: Steel Turn Away Hawks

Taking the lead early on Saturday, the Chicago Steel stayed out of the Waterloo Black Hawks' reach for the rest of the affair during a 5-3 result at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

The Steel capitalized for the opening goal at 1:18 on a redirection by Eduards Tralmaks. Matt Kiersted took the initial shot from the left point, and later Kiersted doubled the lead at 15:49. Joining a rush as the trailing player, his shot deflected off a Black Hawk stick, fluttering over the left shoulder of a helpless Robbie Beydoun.

The Hawks drew back within a goal thanks to Hank Sorensen's power play blast at 14:28 of the second. However, Chicago capitalized twice in less than a minute to extend their margin to 4-1 by intermission. Johnny Walker fired a chance into the net during a power play at 18:47, followed up by Jake Jaremko's redirection of a shot-pass from Kiersted at 19:45.

The Steel stretched their lead to its largest margin with a goal by Jack Badini just 19 seconds into the third period, turning an initial shot which went wide into a goal at the opposite side of the net.

Waterloo made it exciting during the late stages, with two goals separated by 26 seconds, both from close range. Bailey Conger had the first at 6:37, followed by Shane Bowers at 7:03. However Ales Stezka stopped the rest of Waterloo's chances, finishing the game with 26 saves.

The Black Hawks see the next-best team in the Eastern Conference in Waterloo Friday.
