Postgame Recap: Hawks Overjoyed in Overtime

October 14, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks gave more than a 60-minute effort on Friday during a 2-1 comeback win in overtime at Tyson Events Center against the Sioux City Musketeers.

At 5:19 of the extra period, Nick Swaney banked a pass from his own zone to Shane Bowers at the Musketeer blue line.

Bowers capitalized on the breakaway chance, stepping through the right wing circle to snap a low shot to the wide-side of goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks.

During the late stages of regulation, the combination had worked in the opposite order.

Bowers located the puck behind the Sioux City net and dropped a pass to Swaney at the left hashmark.

Waterloo's leading scorer rifled a game-tying shot to the top corner with 5:38 remaining in regulation.

Hawks goalie Robbie Beydoun made that goal standup to reach overtime.

A diving glove save against Eeli Tolvanen with under three minutes to play was the best of his 39 stops during the contest.

Sioux City outshot Waterloo 40-30.

The Black Hawks had delivered a major penalty killing effort early in the first period.

Waterloo navigated nearly three full minutes of Sioux City power play time before an offsetting penalty was called.

The Musketeer advantage was the result of a major cross checking penalty on Mason Palmer.

Sioux City took the lead at 6:22 of the second period.

Phil Knies capitalized when a bouncing puck came his direction across the slot.

Waterloo stays in the Siouxland Saturday, visiting the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 pm.

Saturday's radio broadcast will be available on 93.5, The Mix.
