January 14, 2013 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Hawks Happenings On The Ice:

The Winterhawks are not only the hottest team in the WHL, but across the entire 60-team CHL, which includes the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The Hawks' 14-game winning streak is one shy of the franchise record and is the longest active streak in the CHL. Portland is also tops in the CHL in points (75) and winning percentage (.872).

The Winterhawks have twice had 15-game winning streaks in their history: December 2, 1979 - January 11, 1980, and January 9, 1998 - February 10, 1998.

Not only do the Hawks lead the CHL's standings as a team, but second-year forward Nic Petan's 74 points are first in the WHL and tops among all CHL players. The OHL's leader is Seth Griffith of the London Knights with 72 points, while the QMJHL's leader is Josh Currie of the PEI Rocket with 71 points.

Petan's 74 points have already more than doubled his total from last season as a 16-year-old rookie, when he had 35 points in 61 games. Along with teammates Oliver Bjorkstrand and Seth Jones, Petan will be participating in the CHL Top Prospects Game Wednesday in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Troy Rutkowski was named the WHL Player of the Week, and is currently on a five-game goal-scoring streak and a seven-game point streak overall. He has 14 points during the streak, and is up to 43 points on the season, second among all WHL defensemen and already just four shy of his career high of 47, set during the 2010-11 season.

Rutkowski is nearing two significant team records. With 322 career games played he's just four games shy of tying the franchise record, currently held by Kevin Haupt. In addition, the durable Rutkowski has played 211 straight games, 10 short of the franchise Ironman streak, held by Andrew Ference.
