Portland defeats Trenton 6-1

(Trenton, NJ)- Portland Starting Pitcher Junichi Tazawa tossed six solid innings to lead the Sea Dogs past the Thunder 6-1 on Tuesday night from Waterfront Park. Portland has won the first two games of the three-game series.

Portland (16-14) jumped on top 1-0 in the second inning. With two outs in the frame, Portland Right Fielder Reid Engel connected on a solo home run off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Alan Horne (0-2). The Sea Dogs added to the lead with three runs in the third inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Designated Hitter Jon Still drilled a three-run triple to increase Portland's lead to 4-0. The Sea Dogs tallied another run in the fifth inning. Catcher Jon Otness scored on a wild pitch by Thunder Reliever Kevin Whelan.

Trenton (14-15) scored its run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Right fielder James Cooper scored on a two-out error in the inning by Portland First baseman Lars Anderson. Cooper extended his on-base streak for the Thunder to 16 games. The Thunder only tallied three hits in the loss.

Tawaza (4-2) allowed only three hits in six innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Horne went three-plus innings, yielded six hits, and four runs. He struck out two and walked three. Thunder Reliever Josh Schmidt went three shutout innings in relief for the Thunder. Thunder Infielder Carlos Mendoza pitched a scoreless frame in the top of the ninth inning after inheriting three base runners, and worked out of a bases-loaded no-out jam. It was the first pitching appearance of Mendoza's professional career.

Trenton conlcudes its three-game series on Wednesday night against Portland. RHP Ryan Pope (1-2, 5.47) will start for Trenton. Portland's Starting Pitcher is TBD. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
