Playoffs Here for the Flash

February 22, 2013 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Rio Grande Valley Flash News Release

HIDALGO, Texas - after having a tepid start to the season the Flash made an improbable playoff run which saw them win their last eight games in a row including playoff rival the Dallas Sidekicks in the process. In the last game, the Flash needed overtime to defeat the Texas Strikers on the road by a score of 11-10 to reach the post-season.

Head Coach Mariano Bollella declared, "It was a fast start for us in Beaumont, but somehow we lost composure and let them back into the game. We had a letdown, but now that we are facing Dallas once again, we have to improve defensively to have a great chance of moving on as we want to be another cup atmosphere."

Below are the match facts before the playoffs start:

Dallas Sidekicks (0-0 in Playoffs; 12-3 in Regular Season) *** @ Rio Grande Valley Flash (0-0 in playoffs; 12-4 in Regular Season)

Welcome to the Playoffs: This will be the first meeting between the two clubs in the post-season; but during the regular season, the Sidekicks took the series three games to one.

Dallas at the State Farm Arena: This is the Sidekicks third visit to the State Farm Arena where they have a record of 1-1.

Goalkeeper Matchup: Sagu vs. Juan Gamboa: Sagu and RGV Flash goalkeeper Juan Gamboa will meet for a third time this season. Gamboa has a win and a loss against Dallas, while Sagu has a record of 3-0.

Best of three series: Sunday marks the first of a best of three games between the Flash and Sidekicks in the next 4 days. RGV returns the visit to Dallas on Thursday, February 28 with the kick-off at 7:30 pm. In the case of a split in the two matches, a 30-minute mini-game will immediately follow Game 2 to determine who moves on. The Ron Newman Cup semi-finals and championship game will be at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, CA on March 10 and 11.

The Origins: The Rio Grande Valley Flash played in the Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido (LMFR) as the Monterrey (Mexico) Flash until 2012, when they relocated the franchise to McAllen, Texas and joined the PASL in September 2012.

How they got here: The Rio Grande Valley Flash capped off their improbable run to the playoffs with a big win over the Chicago Mustangs and a shaky overtime win at the Texas Strikers. The Flash beat Chicago 8-5 on Friday in what was an elimination game. Chicago seemed in control of their playoff destiny for most of the season while RGV struggled to a 4-4 start. After their two weekend wins, the Flash are the hottest team in the league, riding an eight-game winning streak into the playoffs. In what was essentially a meaningless game, though, the Flash needed overtime to defeat the 3-12-but-suddenly-pesky Strikers 11-10 Saturday. The Flash will meet the Dallas Sidekicks who beat RGV in three of four meetings. Against the rest of the league, the Flash went 11-1. (Via: PASL)
