Playoff Chances Erased After Fifth Straight Loss
August 30, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Eastlake, OH - With a 7-5 loss to the Lake County Captains and a West Michigan Whitecaps win on Monday night, the South Bend Silver Hawks have been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. The Hawks will not make the Midwest League playoffs for the first time since 2002.
The problem on Monday night was the same issue that has haunted the Silver Hawks for all five games of the losing streak - hitting with runners in scoring position. The Silver Hawks were just two-for-16 on Monday with RISP and are now six-for-68 (.088 average) over the last five losses.
Early on, however, the Silver Hawks were able to take advantage and jump out to an early lead. Ender Inciarte tripled in the second and scored on a Jason Knapp (ND) wild pitch for the 1-0 lead.
Chris Jarrett tripled in the third and David Nick brought him home with a RBI single to make it 2-0. Bobby Borchering followed with an infield hit, but the next three batters were retired with the runners staying at first and second.
Victor Estevez walked to lead off the fourth and scored on a Tyson Van Winkle double to push the lead to 3-0. Van Winkle later scored on an error to give the Silver Hawks a 4-0 edge.
Lake County struck for three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth against Adam Worthington (LP, 5-6) to take a lead they wouldn't give up. RBI doubles by Adam Abraham and Chris Kersten made it 4-2 in the fourth, with Kyle Smith adding a RBI single to turn it into a one-run game.
Kersten did the damage in the fifth with a three run homer just inside the pole down the left-field line. His 13th homer of the year gave the Captains the 6-4 lead after five innings.
Lake County added a run on a Tyler Holt single in the eighth to make it 7-4, before the Silver Hawks got another RBI hit from Nick to score Jarrett in the ninth for the final margin. Preston Guilmet (SV, 10) struck out the side after Nick's hit to end the game.
Nick and Jarrett both had three hits for South Bend. Kevin Munson (ND) returned to the mound and struck out all three batters he faced in his first action since August 15th for the Silver Hawks.
Owen Dew (WP, 1-1) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win after Knapp lasted just 3.1 innings. Nick Sarianides (ND) also had two scoreless innings in relief as the Hawks were held without a hit from the fifth until the ninth.
South Bend wraps up the road trip with game four against the Captains on Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Scottie Allen (4-4, 4.83 ERA) will get the ball for South Bend against Lake County's LHP Francisco Jimenez (8-1, 3.87 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
