Mississippi Braves News Release
The M-Braves entered Wednesday night's game with their magic number at two games meaning any combination of M-Braves wins or Montgomery losses equaling two would clinch the Southern League South's second-half title. The stars were aligned for the Braves as they defeated Mobile, 7-2, and West Tenn defeated Montgomery, 8-1. The Braves will be making their second straight appearance in the Southern League playoffs.
Mobile got on the board in the top of the second. John Hester ripped a two-out double to right and Cyle Hankerd singled him home for the first run of the game.
The Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the second. Willie Cabrera walked and moved to third on a double by JC Boscan. Cabrera scored when Kris Medlen grounded out to first. Boscan came in to score on JC Holt's double off the centerfield wall. After two, the Braves led 2-1.
Mississippi added another run in the fourth. Van Pope walked and stole second to get into scoring position. Pope scored the Braves third run on a bloop-single by Javier Guzman. After four, the Braves were up 3-1.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Mississippi ripped six consecutive hits to blow the game open. Willie Cabrera started the rally with his first AA triple off the left-center field wall. He scored easily on Pope's single to left and Pope moved to third on a single by Boscan. Pope scored and Boscan moved to third on a double by Medlen. Holt singled home Boscan and Guzman singled home Medlen to give the Braves a 7-1 lead.
Mobile got a run on three singles in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-2.
Kris Medlen gave up a run on five hits while fanning eight through six innings to improve to 7-8 on the year. Sung Ki Jung gave up a run on four hits through two innings. Bryan Dumesnil tossed a scoreless ninth to finish out the win.
Adam Howard gave up three runs on seven hits over four innings of work. Forrest Cory gave up four runs on nine hits over three frames. Jason Urquidez tossed one shutout inning.
The Braves welcome the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx to town for a five-game series Thursday night. In game one, Mississippi's Johnny Venters will take on West Tenn's Joe Woerman.
On Thursday night, August 28th, the M-Braves will celebrate the teachers and educators of Mississippi. All teachers and educators and their families will receive half-priced admission after showing their school ID or business card. Thursday night is also Thirsty Thursday when all 16 oz. fountain drinks and draft beer will be only $1 and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Night when Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame members Hill Denson, Doug Hutton, Willie Richardson, Marvin Terrell, Sammy Winder, Dr. Walker Reed and Rev. Dave McIntosh will all be in attendance.

The M-Braves clinched the Southern League South second-half championship with the win over Mobile ... The Braves will make their second consecutive playoff appearance.
The win was the Braves 70th of the year setting a new team record for the most wins in team history ... It also guaranteed that the Braves could finish no worse than .500 for the season for the first time in team history.
Kris Medlen struck out eight and earned his seventh win ... He also went 1-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored at the plate.
JC Holt went 4-5 with a double and two RBI in the win ... Javier Guzman went 4-4 with two RBI.
Willie Cabrera went 2-4 with a triple and two runs scored ... Van Pope went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored ... JC Boscan went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.
