Pitching Remains Lights out for the Tourists

Asheville Tourists News Release

CHARLESTON--The Asheville Tourists put together their first shutout victory of the season on Saturday night; a 3-0 win over the Charleston RiverDogs. Erick Julio tossed seven scoreless frames and Asheville used some timely two-out hitting to secure their second straight against the RiverDogs.

Despite the fact that the Tourists offense was held to three runs or less for the seventh straight game, the pitching combination of Julio, Matt Dennis, and JD Hammer would not give in to one of most potent offensive teams in the South Atlantic League.

Charleston had an opportunity early against Julio when they put runners at second and third with no outs in the bottom of the first inning. The right-hander out of Cartagena, Columbia induced a pop out followed by back-to-back strikeouts to escape the threat. The RiverDogs never had another runner reach third base the rest of the game.

The Tourists netted a pair of two-out hits in the sixth inning to score the game's first run. Jose Gomez singled into left and Vince Fernandez doubled to deep centerfield to plate Gomez.

Asheville added two more in the eighth. Manny Melendez legged out an infield single and Gomez later drove him in. Fernandez made it a two-run inning with an RBI base hit to right that scored Gomez.

Charleston has scored a total of one run over the last 18 innings of this series and Antonio Santos will attempt to quiet the RiverDogs once more on Sunday. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:05pm.
