Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (24-16) held the Iowa Cubs (18-20) to just four hits in a 2-1 series-opening victory on Thursday night at Cheney Stadium.

Tacoma starting pitcher Donn Roach (3-2) worked his longest outing of the season, holding Iowa to just one run on four hits over 6.2 innings of work - he issued no walks and struck out seven en route to his third win of the year.

David Rollins (1.1) and Mayckol Guaipe (1.0) combined to close out the game, holding the Cubs hitless with four combined strikeouts. Guaipe earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Right fielder Mike Baxter put the Rainiers on top 1-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. The one-out blast over the right-center field wall gave him a home run in each of the last three games, with four total over that span.

Iowa answered with a solo home run of their own off the bat of John Andreoli in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1.

The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when third baseman Luis Sardinas slapped an RBI single into left field, scoring Stefen Romero from second to give Tacoma the 2-1 edge.

The Rainiers and Cubs continue their series tomorrow, Friday, May 20. Right-hander Joe Wieland (2-3, 9.10) will take the mound for Tacoma opposite Iowa righty Jake Buchanan (3-1, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
