Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates (3-4-0-0) fell to the Rochester Americans (4-5-0-0) in a 4-3 Halloween Matinee loss at the Cross Insurance Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates made the first mark in the game, but were unable to keep up with the Americans who scored three goals in the second period on their way to the win. It was the Pirates third straight loss, their first at home in the 2015-2016 season. Two players, MacKenzie Weegar and Brent Regner, got their first goals in Pirates uniform this afternoon.
Weegar scored the first goal of the night at 3:58 in the first period, assisted by Rob Schremp and Wayne Simpson.
The next goal didn't come until 8:31 in the second when Rochester's Justin Bailey found the back of the net with help from Jean Dupuy and William Carrier. The Americans took the lead at 10:39 when Carrier scored a goal of his own, assisted by Brady Austin and Dupuy. Rochester scored their third goal of the period at 17:35 when Phil Varone scored on the power play, assisted by Colby Robak and Nick Baptiste. The Pirates answered back with a goal from Kyle Rau at 18:03, assisted by Simpson and Cameron Gaunce.
Varone scored his second goal of the night 5 minutes into the third stanza, assisted by Carrier and Bobby Sanguinetti. The Pirates kept trying to rally, shooting off 19 shots in the third period alone, but ultimately came up short.
