Portland Pirates News Release
Manchester, New Hampshire - Linden Vey scored with 1:44 remaining in the third period off a crossing pass from Justin Azevedo to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 4-3 victory over the Portland Pirates in front of 5,015 at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
David Meckler, Ray Kaunisto and Marc-Andre Cliche each tallied for the Monarchs as they raised their record to 6-8-0-1 on the season.
Nathan Oystrick, Brett Hextall and Andy Miele found the back of the net for the Pirates as they dropped to 4-6-0-1.
Similar to the previous matchup between the two clubs on Sunday, the Pirates jumped out to an early lead with Oystrick's third of the season (all against the Monarchs) at the 5:39 mark of the opening period. However this time the Monarchs had a rapid answer 54 seconds later, with Meckler capitalizing on a breakaway opportunity off a neutral zone turnover to even the score. Six minutes into the second period, Hextall released a shot from the point that squeezed through the legs of Manchester goaltender Jeff Zatkoff to give Portland their second lead of the game. Kaunisto would tie the back-and-forth affair again for the Monarchs at the 11:24 mark of the middle frame, scoring from behind the net and off the pads of Portland goaltender Curtis McElhinney. Midway through the third period, Manchester grabbed their first lead of the contest on a shorthanded breakaway tally from Marc-Andre Cliche, his seventh of the season and fourth against the Pirates. Miele gave the game its third tie with 4:32 remaining before Vey humbled the visitors hope with his third goal of the year.
The Pirates out-shot the Monarchs by a 31-28 margin as Zatkoff received the victory in net for Manchester, improving his record to 2-2-1 on the season. McElhinney made 24 saves as he dropped to 2-5-0 for Portland.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were: 1. Vey; 2. Cliche; 3. Oystrick.
