Pilots Snap Sharks' 7 Game Win Streak

June 19, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

All good things must come to an end, and on Sunday night, the seven game win streak ended for the Wilmington Sharks (10-7) as they dropped their first game in over a week to the Peninsula Pilots (11-4) 2-1.

The league leader in strikeouts, Connor Riley (USC Aiken), rung up nine more batters Saturday. However, one tough inning ended up being the difference in this game. A single and a hit batter set the table, and a two RBI single by Will Shephard (Liberty) gave Peninsula the lead.

The Sharks had plenty of chances. They left at least one runner on base in all but one inning. They had runners at the corners with only one out in the eighth, but back to back flyouts kept them off the board.

In the ninth, Ward Coleman (Davidson) singled and was brought home on a double by Ryan Jeffers (UNC Wilmington). Chris Graham (UNC Greensboro) came in to pinch run, but was stranded on second to end the game.

The win went to Chris Gau (1-0). He pitched five scoreless innings with four hits, two walks and struck out two. Connor Riley (0-3) took the loss, pitching five innings, allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and striking out nine. Michael Parmentier (1) picked up the save with two thirds of an inning inning, no hits, no runs, and one strikeout.

The Sharks continue their two game road trip in Virginia. They'll play at Petersburg on Monday. They'll return home to face Asheboro on Wednesday.
