Phillies Sign Esposito
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 13, 2010) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced that pitcher Joe Esposito has been signed by the Philadelphia Phillies organization and will report to their Single-A affiliate. Esposito has dazzled recently, striking out 25 batters over his last 20 and one-third innings while compiling a 2.66 ERA. He becomes the first Duck in 2010 to be signed by an affiliated club and the third overall (Joe Valentine and Joselo Diaz, Mexico).
"Joe has been tremendous for us," says Ducks general manager Michael Pfaff. "He will surely be missed, but we wish him all the best with the Phillies."
Esposito pitched in 25 games for the Ducks this season, including four starts. He compiled a 3-4 record along with a 2.98 ERA and four saves. The right-hander struck out 53 batters in 48 and one-third innings pitched, allowing just 35 hits and 15 walks. His efforts earned him a spot on the Liberty Division roster in the 2010 Atlantic League All-Star Game, presented by T-Mobile, held at the home of the Ducks. The Baldwin native threw a scoreless ninth inning to seal the Liberty's 7-1 victory over the Freedom Division.
The 25-year-old spent the 2009 season with Single-A Frederick and Single-A Delmarva in the Baltimore Orioles organization, and combined to post a 4-2 record with a 2.93 ERA in 38 games. He has played three seasons in the Orioles organization, totaling a 12-7 record, a 2.87 ERA, and nine saves in 87 games. Esposito played college baseball at New York Institute of Technology.
