Philadelphia Union News Release

Harrison, NJ.- Philadelphia Union fell to New York Red Bulls 3-2 on Saturday at Red Bull Arena in front of a crowd of 22,731 in the final regular season road contest of the 2016 season. The loss brings Philadelphia's record to 11-12-9 this season with 42 points. Philadelphia is back in action on Oct. 16 when they host Orlando City SC at Talen Energy Stadium.

Philadelphia struck first for the second consecutive week, in the 15th minute, as Fabian Herbers notched his third goal of the season. The goal was set up as Fabinho delivered a pass to Pontius just outside of the box. The Union midfielder was able to draw the defenders in long enough to find Herbers in space. Herbers was able to cash in and give the Union the early 1-0 lead.

Union goalkeeper Andre Blake made the save of the night in the 26th minute, denying Mike Grella from pointblank range. Grella deleiverd a missile that appeared destined for the back of the net, but Blake dropped to his knees and kept the Union lead intact. Red Bull broke through in the 44th minute thanks to Sacha Kljestan who buried home the attempt after a nice display of passing from Felipe.

New York's second goal was set up by the speed of Bradley Wright-Phillips. Dax McCarty sent a long pass that sent Wright-Phillips into a foot race with two Philadelphia defenders. New York's leading goal-scorer was able to deliver a shot that beat Blake to give New York the 2-1 lead.

Pontius made his presence felt again, this time in the 55th minute. Fabinho sent in a ball that found the head of Pontius who was able to find space in the box and deliver home the header to tie the match at two. The goal for Pontius was his 12th of the season, tying his career high.

After a foul was called on Tranquillo Barnetta, Red Bull was awarded a free-kick. Kljestan's service found the head of McCarty and he rose to the occasion to give New York the 3-2 lead in the 66th minute.

Philadelphia had their best attempt to tie the match in the 82nd minute; again it was Pontius leading the charge. Defender Ken Tribbett set up Pontius who sent a spectacular shot towards the net, but Robles dove to his left and was able to deflect the shot attempt away. The score ultimately held at 3-2 Red Bull.

Philadelphia will be in action on Oct. 16 in the second to last regular season match in the 2016 campaign. The club will welcome Orlando City, with a special kick-off time of 3 p.m. The match will be televised on The Comcast Network.
