Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADELPHIA - Patrick Maroon had a hand in all five goals to lead the Phantoms to a 5-2 victory over the Binghamton Senators. The rookie winger tallied a hat trick and added two assists to become the first Phantoms player to record a five-point game in more than two years.

The Phantoms offense picked up where it left off on Friday night, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead 6:49 into the first period. While working with the man advantage, Danny Syvret fed a pass to Jared Ross at the left side circle, which he immediately fired on goal. Senators goaltender Jeff Glass was unable to squeeze the puck and Maroon was able to stuff the rebound just past the goal line.

The power play unit struck again at the 11:35 mark of the first period. Jason DeSantis worked the puck behind the net to Maroon, who scanned the front of the net to find an open man. Ross came free at the right side circle and Maroon hit him with a pass. Ross settled the puck and took advantage of a shooting lane in front to wrist a shot above the right shoulder of Glass to give the Phantoms a 2-0 advantage.

Philadelphia took a 3-0 lead 15:12 into the first period. Maroon dumped the puck in deep behind the Binghamton net, where Jonathan Matsumoto took possession. He patiently waited for an opportunity and found Jeff Szwez crashing the net. Before Glass could even turn around, Szwez fired one just inside the near post. The third tally ended the night early for Glass, as he was pulled in favor of Brian Elliott.

Binghamton was able to get one back with just 1:02 remaining in the first period. While on the power play, Josh Hennessey work the puck back to Shannon at the left side point. Shannon then spotted Mattias Karlsson alone at the top of the right circle, and he unloaded a slap shot that beat Phantoms goalie Scott Munroe underneath the left pad to make the score 3-1.

The Senators inched closer to erasing the deficit on a goal at the 8:52 mark of the second period. Derek Smith forced a turnover inside the Phantoms zone and passed the puck to Shannon streaking down the left side. Shannon, who was able to beat a Phantoms defender as he neared the net, backhanded a pass to Ilya Zubov that he fired by the out stretched glove of Munroe making the score 3-2.

Just 1:36 into the third period, the Phantoms once again increased their lead to two goals. With the man advantage, Sean Curry worked the puck from the blue line to David Laliberte at the left circle. Laliberte's shot was initially blocked by Elliott, but Maroon swept in and stuffed the puck past the sprawling netminder to increase the Phantoms lead to 4-2.

Maroon capped off his night with an empty net tally with just 51 seconds left in the game. It was the Phantoms second hat trick of the season. The first came from Boyd Kane on November 1st at Hershey. The goal completed Maroon's five-point night, making him the first Phantom to score five points in a game since Marty Murray posted two goals and three assists on October 20, 2006.

Munroe notched his tenth win of the season in the victory, which was Philadelphia's third consecutive home win. He finished the night with 20 saves on 22 shots. Glass made nine saves on the 12 shots he faced before giving way to Elliott at the end of the first period. Elliott finished the night with 14 saves on 15 shots. The Philadelphia power play unit converted on four of their seven opportunities while Binghamton was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
