Week 26 Game Results

April 6, 2011 - Albany 1 @ Adirondack 4

On Fan Appreciation Night at the GFCC, the Phantoms won the Time Warner Cable Cup over their division-rival, the Albany Devils. Michael Ryan notched the Phantoms third hat-trick in the their four-game homestand while goaltender Johan Backlund made 19 saves to earn his first win since March 6 against the Devils. Andy Thomas gave the Devils a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a shot that went off Johan Backlund's left leg-pad into the net for just his second goal of the year. Michael Ryan tied the game at 1-1 on a shot from the right circle over the shoulder of Devils netminder Mike McKenna. The first of his three goals came during a 5-on-3 power play early in the second period. Ryan notched his second of the game and 24th of the year as he tipped in a Dan Jancevski shot from center point giving Adirondack a 2-1 lead 3:14 into the third period. The hats hit the ice when Ryan picked up the rebound off an Erik Gustafsson slap shot with 2:26 remaining in the game for a 3-1 lead. That goal moved Ryan into a tie for the team-lead in goals (25) with Denis Hamel. Matt Read scored an empty net goal with 1:23 remaining in the third to tally his fifth of the year and extend the Phantoms home win streak to seven games to end the regular season.

April 8, 2011 - Adirondack 1 @ Manchester 4

Adirondack's four-game win streak was snapped on Friday night as the Monarchs defeated the Phantoms 4-1 at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Manchester raced out to a 2-0 lead with goals three minutes apart midway through the first period. Kozun was rushing up the middle and chipped a centering feed past Backlund for the first goal of the night and his 22d of the year. Patrick Mullen would carry the puck beyond the goal line and his attempt to center in across went off the back of Backlund's leg and into the cage for a 2-0 advantage. Adirondack cut the deficit to 2-1 on Mike Testwuide's 18th goal of the season. Testwuide now leads all Phantoms rookies in goal scoring as Ben Holmstrom and Eric Wellwood each have 16 goals. Kozun scored his second of the game and 23rd of the year to give Manchester a 3-1 lead with 5:24 remaining in the third period. Kozun pounced on a turnover in the Phantoms zone and from the right wing circle beat Johan Backlund. John Zeiler scored his ninth of the year as he added an empty net late in the third. Adirondack finished 0-for-4 on the PP and went 3-for-3 on the PK.

April 9, 2011 - Adirondack 2 @ Binghamton 1

Matt Read's sixth goal of the season with 6:06 remaining was the eventual game-winner as the Phantoms defeated the Senators on Fan Appreciation Night in Binghamton. After a scoreless opening period, Roman Wick gave Binghamton a 1-0 lead on the pp at the 4:46 mark of the second period. Wick scored his 20th of the season blasting one from the right-wing circle past Backlund. Michael Ryan tied the game at 1-1 on his eighth goal in the last six games late in the second period. A Kevin Marshall slap shot from the point was blocked down by Senators netminder Barry Brust but Michael Ryan picked up a loose puck on the right side of the crease and tapped it home. It was Ryan's team-leading 26th goal of the season passing Denis Hamel who had 25 goals. The 1-1 deadlock would remain for much of the third until the Phantoms aggressiveness of the fore-check would pay off in the form of the game-winner. Rob Bordson got to it in the right-wing corner and rifled it to Read in the slot who then shot it five-hole past Brust with 6:06 remaining. Backlund came up with a couple big saves late and finished with 27 saves on the night to earn his 10th win of the season. The Phantoms finished 0-for-4 on the PP and 4-for-5 on the PK.

April 10, 2011 - Adirondack 2 @ Wilkes-Barre 4

Three goals in a seven-minute span for the Penguins in the third period helped Wilkes-Barre defeat Adirondack in their regular season finale. Rob Bordson opened the scoring midway through the first period as he one-timed a Denis Hamel pass from the top of the right circle past the left skate of Brad Thiessen. The Penguins tied the game late in the first period on the power play as Nick Peterson sent a rebound past Phantoms netminder Johan Backlund. The Phantoms would take a 2-1 lead at the 11:38 mark of the second period on Matt Read's seventh goal in just his 11th game as a Phantom. Read jumped on a turnover in front of the Penguins net and sent one past goaltender Brad Thiessen. Adirondack clung to a 2-1 lead until Chris Collins tied the game at 2-2 on a shot from the right wing circle. Ryan Schnell gave the Penguins their first lead of the night at 14:14 mark of the third. He chipped a Joey Mormina shot from the point over the shoulder of Johan Backlund to give Wilkes-Barre a 3-2 lead. Less than two minutes later, Nick Petersen scored his second of the night and fifth of the year as he raced up the right wing and drove straight to the net where he was able to flip it past Backlund. Johan Backlund was stellar throughout the game making 18 of his 36 saves on the night in the third period. The Penguins finished the season with the best record in the AHL (58-21-0-1,117 pts). Adirondack won three of the final four meetings between the teams and finished 3-5-0 against Wilkes-Barre on the year. The Phantoms went 0-for-1 on the power play while the Penguins finished 1-for-2.
