Phantoms to Host 2017-18 Selection Camp

May 26, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The Youngstown Phantoms will host their 2017 Selection Camp May 31st to June 4th in Youngstown, Ohio. The five-day long camp will determine the Phantoms hockey team for the 2017-18 United States Hockey League season and will be held at the Ice Zone facility located at 360 McClurg Road Youngstown, Ohio 44512. The Ice Zone is the Phantoms' practice facility during the season.

The Phantoms Selection camp is an invitation-only camp in which selected players received an invitation via email following the USHL Drafts on May 1st and May 2nd. Due to the USHL league policy, no camp invitations could be sent out until the conclusion of the USHL Phase II Draft on May 2nd.

Wednesday and Thursday, May 31st and June 1st, will feature the Goaltender Camp in which junior and college hockey shooters will be on hand to shoot on the goaltending invitees. Each goaltender in attendance gets three on-ice sessions over the two days and is evaluated through a variety of drills. This camp gives selected goaltenders a chance to earn a coveted spot in the Phantoms Final Camp immediately following the Goaltender Camp. All goaltenders expecting to play for the Phantoms must go through this portion of camp. This camp, along with the Final Camp evaluation, allows the Phantoms hockey staff to make the best decisions possible on the most important position in the game.

The Final Camp will begin Friday and Saturday, June 2nd and 3rd. Here, teams of non-Phantom veteran junior players, USHL draft picks, especially invited free agent players, and returning Phantoms' USHL players, play for an undetermined number of spots for the next portion of the Final Camp, which takes place Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Saturday evening and Sunday morning, June 3rd and 4th, will feature two "All Star" teams of the top players from the Goaltender Camp and the first days of the Final Camp. These players will participate in games and individual interviews with the Phantoms staff before roster decisions are made on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday, June 4th after the final game, the Phantoms hockey staff will select the 2017-18 Youngstown Phantoms team that will compete in the USHL next season. These players will meet with the staff, go over their off-season expectations and team rules. In addition, they will be tested for off-ice conditioning, given their off-season workout programs and get acquainted with their new teammates and hockey staff as the team looks forward to a great season, which will begin when the players report to Youngstown in late August.

This camp is also a great opportunity for players who may not think they are quite ready for the USHL level yet, but want to experience an extremely competitive camp, become familiar with one of the top developmental programs in the country, meet the Phantoms staff, and show their potential for following season(s).

The Phantoms will contact and invite NHL and NCAA Division I teams, as well as other junior league programs such as the North American Hockey League (NAHL) with whom the Phantoms' have positive relationships with to attend and scout players who participate in the Phantoms Selection Camp for maximum hockey exposure for our participants.
