Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms topped the Madison Capitols by a final score of 5-3 Saturday night in Wisconsin. After falling behind 3-1 in the first 11 minutes, Phantoms goaltender Ryan Bednard was pulled in favor of Colin DeAugustine. DeAugustine turned away all 22 shots he faced after replacing Bednard.

"You always have to be ready and prepared to play every game. I was seeing everything well and the guys played very well in front of me. It was a great comeback," DeAugustine said.

For the second straight night the Phantoms jumped out to an early lead, only to fall behind in the first period. Patrick Kramer got Youngstown on the board just over two minutes into the contest, when he beat Capitols goaltender Garrett Metcalf off of a pass from Noah Lalonde. It was Kramer's third goal of the season.

Madison would storm back, scoring three unanswered goals in a span of less than seven minutes to take a 3-1 lead. That's when Phantoms bench boss John Wroblewski made the decision to replace Bednard with DeAugustine.

Just 15 seconds after Wroblewski made a goalie change, the Phantoms would respond. Alex Esposito scored his seventh goal of the year off the ensuing faceoff to cut the Madison lead in half.

The Capitols would take a 3-2 advantage into the first intermission, but it wouldn't take Youngstown long to tie the contest. Just about four minutes into the second frame, Eric Esposito scored his first ever USHL goal to tie the game. Then, with just 15 seconds left in the second period, Tommy Apap gave the Phantoms the lead behind an excellent feed from James Winkler.

The third period was highly contested, with DeAugustine making a handful of big saves to preserve the Phantoms lead. Then, with 1:45 left in regulation, Yushiro Hirano scored an insurance goal for Youngstown, burying a pass from Cam Morrison for his 15th goal on the season to give the Phantoms a 5-3 lead.

"It was a tough game, on the road with travel, playing against a team we haven't faced yet. To go down 3-1 like that and fight back, it's very commendable and admirable of the team," Wroblewski said.

The Phantoms will head back to Youngstown for a weekend series against the league leading Dubuque Fighting Saints. Friday, January 15th with be Youngstown State Night at the Covelli Centre, while Saturday the 16th will be Youth Jersey Giveaway Night presented by Armstrong. Puck drop is set for 7:05p.m. both evenings.
