Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - On Sci-fi/Fantasy night at the Covelli Centre, the visiting Dubuque Fighting Saints played the part of the evil villain, defeating the Youngstown Phantoms (5-4-0, 10 pts) by the score of 4-1 and sweeping the weekend series.

"I thought we played a little bit better than yesterday," said Phantoms head coach Brad Patterson. "In this league and this level it's got to be better than that."

Cole Guttman opened the scoring at 5:35 of the first period with a power play goal, firing home a one timer from the dot off a nice pass from Regen Cavanaugh. Dubuque would take that 1-0 lead into the locker room at the end of the first period. Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi made it 2-0 in favor of Dubuque with a shot off the half-wall at 15:31 of the second period.

Youngstown would get on the board for the first time all weekend when Curtis Hall deflected a Brandon Estes slap shot past Dubuque netminder Jaxon Castor (22 saves) at 18:52 of the second period.

"It was good to see Curtis Hall get rewarded with one," said Patterson. "He doesn't always show up on the scoresheet, but he got there tonight. Coale Norris did a great job on that goal as well."

Dubuque would regain its two-goal edge just 1:55 into the third period when Casey Staum fired a puck off the glass behind the net with so much force that it came right in front to Austin Rueschhoff who shot it past Phantoms goaltender Ivan Kulbakov (25 saves).

Youngstown would pull Kulbajov for the extra skater with 2:02 left in the game, but the comeback was not to be as Jacob Hamacher put one into the empty net at 18:13 to account for the final tally of the night.

Youngstown will finish out the home stand against Team USA's U18 squad on Friday October 28 at 7:05 pm and the Chicago Steel on Sunday October 30 at 5:00 pm. Friday is the annual Pink in the Rink game in conjunction with the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. The Phantoms will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. Sunday is the annual Phantom Phest with lots of fall-themed pregame activities.
