Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - After gaining an early lead, the Youngstown Phantoms (12-8-3-1, 28 points) gave up four unanswered goals to the Madison Capitols and fell 4-1 on Friday night at the Covelli Centre.

"I liked parts of the game," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "At the end of the day, a couple of turnovers, us not putting the puck in the net and not keeping it out."

Youngstown jumped in front just 2:09 into the game. Joey Abate threw a puck from the corner to the net mouth that hit the skate of a defender and directed past Dryden McKay (29 saves) for Abate's third goal of the season, giving the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. "Joey's been great," said Patterson. "He brings energy, he brings compete...he does exactly what we talk about. He's going to be a big piece for us moving forward."

Madison tied the game at 5:26 with a power play goal from Alec Broetzman, who beat Wouter Peeters (20 saves) with a wrist shot from five feet out, and took the lead for good with another power play goal at 14:34, a redirect from the high slot by Mike Mancinelli. "You look at the game and special teams are a big part of it," said Patterson. "I felt like they won it tonight. We've got to get better on the 'PP', get more pucks to the net. There are things we need to sure up and get better at on the kill."

Verners Egle gave the Capitols a 3-1 lead at 9:01 of the second period, beating Peeters with a wrap-around, and Brendan Walkom converted a steal-and-score at 4:11 of the third period to make up the final margin.

Youngstown travels up north to take on the US NTDP U17's tomorrow night at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm and the game will be available on HockeyTV.
