Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms defeated the Chicago Steel by a final score of 6-4 Saturday night. After falling behind 3-1 after the first period, the Phantoms were able to fight back and earn just their second win in the past eight games.

"We needed this one. I thought we played well enough last weekend, just couldn't get any bounces, but tonight we stuck with it and got the two points. They are a good team, but we made some adjustments after the first and came out the way we needed to in the second period," said Phantoms Captain Matt Alvaro.

Chicago struck early, taking the lead just 35 seconds into the contest behind Max Zimmer's fourth goal of the season. Youngstown would tie things up about halfway through the first frame, when Sean Petrie scored his first ever USHL goal with a slap shot from the point that Steel goaltender John Lethemon never saw. The Steel would score two late first period goals however, and take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

Youngstown would quickly tie the contest at the start of the second period. Alvaro scored his fourth goal of the season after some tic-tac-toe passing from Noah Lalonde and Alex Esposito. Alvaro's tally came just 48 seconds into the period. Then less than two minutes later, Tommy Apap scored for the second game in a row to tie the contest at 3-3.

The Phantoms continued to carry play most of the second period, and were rewarded when Alvaro netted his second of the game to give Youngstown a 4-3 lead with just under three minutes left in the period.

Late in the final frame, Kevin Conley scored what seemed to be the insurance goal for Youngstown off of a rocket wrist shot that beat Lethemon blocker side. However, the Steel would answer back to make it a one goal game again with over three minutes left in regulation. Cam Morrison would stick a fork in the Steel for good, scoring an empty-net goal in the final minute to give Youngstown a 6-4 victory.

"You always want to be the team that sets the tone rather than the one playing from behind, but sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. I thought the guys did that tonight and gave everything they had after falling behind early," said Phantoms Head Coach John Wroblewski.

The Phantoms and the Steel will meet again Sunday in Youngstown, with puck drop set for 5:05p.m. It is one of the Phantoms Sunday Funday games, where four tickets and four food vouchers are available in a special discount package.
