Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms have announced the acquisition of forward Joe Abate and a 2018 8th Round Phase II Draft choice from the Omaha Lancers in exchange for a 2018 7th Round Phase II Draft choice and a 2019 5th Round Phase II pick.
"We've had a chance to watch Joe the past five seasons in AAA hockey and in junior hockey and he's made great strides over the last two seasons especially," said Phantoms' General Manager Jason Koehler. "He has of a ton of energy, speed, and grit that we feel will complement the forward group we already have and give our staff a different element - and one we may be lacking right now. We were very impressed by Joe last season in his first full year of junior hockey in the NAHL with the Janesville Jets and we've watched him as he has always been someone we felt would be a great addition for us if the option ever presented itself, which it recently it did."
The 6'2 180 lbs. left shot forward, Joe Abate hails from Bloomingdale, Illinois and had a 1-0-1 line in 12 games for Omaha so far this year in the USHL. Last season with the Janesville Jets (NAHL), Abate had a 13-29-42 line in 53 games to go along with 117 penalty minutes and was a key performer at playoff time for the Jets with a 3-3-6 line in 9 games during the NAHL Playoffs.
Abate had previously played his U16 AAA and U18 AAA hockey in Chicago with the Chicago Fury and Chicago Misssion programs, where he spent his final U18 season with current Phantom forward Matthew Barry. Abate was an 8th round pick (118 overall) in the 2014 USHL Phase I Draft of the Tri City Storm and was then selected again last spring by the Madison Capitols in the 4th round (59th overall) in the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft. He is currently uncommitted to a NCAA Division I college.
