Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release

Oklahoma City - A walk-off RBI single from catcher Carlos Perez in the 12th inning scored Brandon Laird for a 9-8 Oklahoma City RedHawks win against the Iowa Cubs Thursday in front of a crowd of 5,462 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The RedHawks (35-29) led 6-0 through five innings and later took an 8-4 edge before Iowa (30-36) tied the game with four unanswered runs to force extra innings in the series finale.

Brandon Laird led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a single for the RedHawks. He later advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on the two-out RBI single to right field by Perez.

Laird led Oklahoma City with three hits. Perez had two hits and a team-high three RBI for the RedHawks in four-hour, 24-minute game.

Donnie Murphy led Iowa with three hits and Dave Sappelt had a game-high four RBI for the I-Cubs.

Thursday marked the fifth extra-inning game of the season for Oklahoma City and gave the RedHawks a split in the four-game series with Iowa.

Laird's solo home run to left field - and into the RedHawks bullpen - in the second inning was his fourth homer in the last 13 games. The recent stretch started with a home run at Iowa May 24 and Laird now has six home runs this season.

Oklahoma City's offense opened up the game in the fourth inning with five runs. Marc Krauss hit a line drive double to center field to score Justin Maxwell. With the bases loaded, Perez doubled to left field to bat in two runs. A third run scored on an Iowa Cubs throwing error for a 5-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt from Robbie Grossman put Oklahoma City up 6-0.

Oklahoma City starting pitcher Brad Peacock retired the first 15 batters he faced Thursday, before Iowa broke through in the sixth on a Sappelt double to center. He later scored on a single by Brent Lillibridge. The I-Cubs then added three runs in the seventh inning. Steve Clevenger scored on a fielding error by second baseman Jose Martinez. Murphy's single to right field scored two runs and cut the RedHawks lead to 6-4.

Oklahoma City scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to open up an 8-4 lead on a RBI triple from Brett Wallace and RBI single from Maxwell, who opened a MLB rehab assignment with the RedHawks.

Sappelt's three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning cut the RedHawks lead to 8-7. Clevenger doubled to score Logan Watkins and tie the game, 8-8, in the top of the ninth inning.

Peacock allowed one run and two hits in 6.0 innings and struck out four. Eric Berger (3-1) ended up with the win on the mound for Oklahoma City. He pitched the 12th inning and allowed one hit. Iowa's Marcus Hatley (1-1) threw 1.2 innings, allowing one run and two hits.

Oklahoma City's eight-game homestand continues at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks open a four-game series against Round Rock on a Fireworks Friday. A fireworks show presented by Oklahoma Blood Institute will follow the conclusion of the game.
