Perez Hurls Gem in Shutout Win over Phils

The SeaWolves used a brilliant starting performance by Kelvin Perez and timely hitting as they shut out the Reading Fightin Phils 2-0 on Thursday night at First Energy Stadium.

Erie broke the scoreless tie in the third against Reading starter Seth Rosin. James Robbins led off with a double to the alley in right center. Marcus Lemon laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Robbins to third and he scored on a Jamie Johnson sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

Perez ran into trouble in the fourth inning allowing back-to-back hits to Zach Collier and Maikel Franco but he worked through it with no damage.

In the seventh, Erie added an insurance run off of reliever Colby Shreve. James McCann led off with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. Wade Gaynor lifted a sacrifice fly down the right field line, scoring McCann for a 2-0 lead.

Perez (1-1) allowed just two base runners over his final three innings of work, one on a single and one on an error. He faced four over the minimum in seven innings of work.

Ryan Robowski tossed a scoreless eighth after allowing the first two to reach on a walk and a single.

In the ninth, Melvin Mercedes retired the first two batters on fly outs to right before Kelly Dugan and John Suomi each singled putting the tying run at first. Mercedes induced a ground ball of the bat of Anthony Hewitt to end the game, earning his sixth save.

The SeaWolves begin a three game series against the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Drew VerHagen (2-3, 2.57 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Kyle Davies (1-0, 5.23 ERA).
