Peoria Shuts Down Wisconsin

GRAND CHUTE, WI -- Jeremy Papelbon pitched seven scoreless innings as the Peoria Chief offense banged out fourteen hits in an 8-0 win. Russ Canzler and Marquez Smith both had a pair of RBI for Peoria
The Chiefs (32-26 second half, 63-64 overall) scored twice in the first inning. Jim Adduci scored from third when catcher Jair Fernandez went to second with a throw to get Blake Lalli as Lalli attempted to get there after a wild pitch. Canzler drove in Lalli with a double later in the frame. Smith blooped in an RBI single in the top of the third inning and Peoria led 3-0.
The Chiefs pulled away in the top of the fourth. Rattler starting pitcher Anthony Varvaro loaded the bases on a walk, another walk after an out was recorded and a single. Rollie Gibson relieved Varvaro and got a grounder for a potential double play. But, the ball got by second baseman Ron Garth and two runs scored for a 5-0 Peoria lead. Blake Lalli and Canzler followed with consecutive RBI singles. An RBI double by Smith made the score 8-0.
Papelbon kept the Rattler hitters off balance through his seven shutout innings. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out six for his seventh win of the season.
Jose Ceda finished off the Rattlers (23-34, 45-80) with four strikeouts over two scoreless innings.
The final game Wisconsin's sixteen game home stand is Thursday night against the Peoria Chiefs. The Rattlers have Steve Richard (5-4, 3.79) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Arick Hempy will be making his Midwest League debut as the starter for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm.
