Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Unable to fully overcome a series of deficits, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell 5-2 to the Providence Bruins on Sunday afternoon at Dunkin' Donuts Center.

The Penguins (29-11-0-1) held the Bruins' power play scoreless on five different opportunities, improving to a perfect 15-for-15 on the season against the league's best man advantage, but ultimately never held a lead in a contest that dropped their overall record to 3-3-0-0 at the end of their six-game road trip.

Frank Vatrano put the Bruins on the scoreboard first with an unassisted tally at 14:36 of the opening period.

Jean-Sébastien Dea opened the scoring in what would become a wild second period, tying the game, 1-1, 1:30 into the middle frame.

Providence took back the lead, 2-1, when Colton Hargrove responded 50 seconds after Dea's goal.

Josh Archibald earned the Penguins another equalizer just 1:31 after the Bruins took back their one-goal advantage. Archibald's seventh goal of the season and seventh goal of the month knotted the game at 2-2.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton poured the pressure on goalie Malcolm Subban and the rest of the Providence squad as the second period wore on, but one break saw the Bruins hop back on top, 3-2, thanks to an Andrew Cherniwchan goal coming 13:17 into the second.

The game was brought to a halt with 5:20 remaining in the second period after the Penguins' Sahir Gill delivered a crunching hit to Tommy Cross that shattered the glass inside the Bruins' defensive zone. A lengthy clean-up resulted in both teams going back to their respective locker rooms and the final five minutes-plus of the second period being added onto the start of the third and final period of regulation.

When the Penguins and Bruins came back onto the ice following the impromptu intermission, Providence quickly added to its lead with Colby Cave cashing in on a rebound chance at what was considered 16:56 of the second period.

Austin Czarnik made it 5-2 in favor of the Bruins with a shorthanded goal with 33 seconds left in the second.

After the conclusion of the 5:20 added onto the clock following the early second intermission, the two teams switched ends only to play a scoreless third period.

Matt Murray ended up with 25 saves on 30 shots, while Subban stopped 24 shots himself at the other end of the ice.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton returns to Northeast Pennsylvania for its first game on home ice since Jan. 9 when it takes on the Hartford Wolf Pack this Wednesday, Jan. 27. Puck drop between the Penguins and Wolf Pack is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
