Penguins shut out IceCaps
January 23, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL) - St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps were blanked 3-0 by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, snapping the team's season-high four game point streak.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored all three goals in the first period and capitalized on a tired IceCaps team, which was playing its fourth game in six nights. Former IceCap Riley Holzapfel notched a goal and an assist while goaltender Brad Thiessen stopped all 26 shots he faced.
The Penguins opened the scoring just 2:32 into the opening period on their first power play attempt of the game. After Ben Maxwell was assessed a tripping minor, the Penguins used some slick passing to get on the board. Holzapfel sent a perfect cross-ice feed to Alex Grant, who one-timed the puck after creeping in from the bluneline, beating Pasquale and giving the home side a 1-0 lead.
The Penguins made it 2-0 later in the period on another goal by a blueliner. Philip Samuelsson grabbed the puck at the point and wristed a shot through a maze of players and into the net, making it 2-0.
Towards the end of the frame, the Penguins extended their lead to three. Heading in on a three-on-two rush, Paul Thompson fired a shot from the right side that kicked out to an unmarked Holzapfel, who banged in the rebound to make it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.
That would be all the scoring for the game, as neither team was able to generate any offence during the final two periods.
St. John's killed off 3-of-4 penalties while going 0-for-2 on the power play.
The IceCaps travel to Hershey to face the Bears on Friday before wrapping up their six-game road trip in Syracuse Saturday.
