Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

PORTLAND, Maine. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins rallied from a 2-0 first period deficit, scoring three unanswered goals for a 3-2 victory versus the Portland Pirates at Cumberland County Civic Center.

Biddeford, Maine-native Brian Dumoulin cut the Pirates' lead in half, 2-1, with his fifth goal of the year. On a 5-on-3 power play, Dumoulin curled the puck on the blade of his stick and let a wrist shot rip over the blocker of Chad Johnson from the near faceoff circle at 12:36 of the second.

Just 1:13 into the third period, Penguins captain Joey Mormina blasted home his own rebound to tie the game at two.

Trevor Smith's wrist shot past Johnson's glove hand at 10:23 capped the comeback. Positioned at the near faceoff dot, the initial shot by Joe Morrow was blocked, but Smith's quick hands put the puck behind Johnson for the Penguins first and only lead of the game.

Portland had struck quickly in the first period to take an early 2-0 lead.

At 3:24 of the opening frame, Andy Miele snuck behind the defense in the neutral zone and lifted a backhand past Jeff Zatkoff on the breakaway.

Boris Valabik doubled the lead with his second of the season just 30 seconds later as he floated a wrist shot from the point through a slew of bodies, beating Zatkoff just underneath the crossbar.

Zatkoff stopped 21 shots for his 20th win of the year. Johnson made 24 saves despite the losing effort.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins wrap up the seven-game road stretch when they travel to Syracuse to take on the Crunch on Wednesday, March 20th at 7:00 P.M.
