Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins return to the friendly confines of the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza for a three-game homestand this week. After this weekend, the Penguins take off on a six-game road swing which will last through the end of the month.

Each of the first 6,000 fans attending Saturday night's home game will receive one Penguins game-used jersey card, courtesy of Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep. Players featured in giveaway #2 include Karl Goehring, Tim Wallace, Mark Ardelan, Connor James and Kurtis McLean.

UPCOMING ACTION:

Wednesday, January 9 vs. Lake Erie - 7:05pm: The Penguins (21-13-0-1, 43 points, second place in East Division) get their first ever glimpse of the Lake Erie Monsters (11-19-1-5, 28 points, sixth in North Division), when the new farm team of the Colorado Avalanche pays a visit this Wednesday night. There will be at least one familiar face in the lineup for the visitors, as former Penguin Matt Hussey (34gp, 7+7=14) ranks fifth on the Monsters in scoring.

Friday, January 11 vs. Hershey 7:05pm: The action really heats up on the weekend, when the Pens play host to the Hershey Bears in an East Division showdown. Hershey (20-13-0-2, 42 points) enters this week just one point behind the Penguins in the East Division standings. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will be looking for a little revenge after dropping a 5-2 decision to the Bears back on December 7. The Pens are 2-2-0-0 against Hershey this season, and the teams will meet five more times after Friday's contest.

Saturday, January 12 vs. Philadelphia - 7:05pm: The East Division leading Phantoms (25-10-1-0, 51 points) square off with the Penguins for the sixth time this season on Saturday night, and hold a three-games-to-two advantage in the head-to-head series so far this season. On the bright side, the Penguins have won each of the last two meetings with Philadelphia, and will host their intra-state rivals three more times after this weekend.

All Penguins games can be seen live via the B2 networks, and can be heard on 92.1 QFM, and via the Penguins website at www.wbspenguins.com.

PENGUINS POINTS OF INTEREST:

- WIN STREAK ENDS AT NINE - The Penguins 4-1 loss in Toronto put an end to their team-record tying nine-game winning streak (also accomplished from October 5-29, 2005). The nine-game streak is the longest such streak in the AHL this season.

- BRENT STILL STREAKING - Penguins forward Tim rent picked up an assist in the Toronto loss, extending his scoring streak to 10 games (4+15=19). That's the fourth-longest scoring streak in the league this season.

Brent also carries a 10-game assist streak into this week's action, tied for the longest in the league this year.

- MAC ON THE ATTACK - Penguins forward Kurtis McLean extended his point streak to seven games with an assist Friday night in Toronto. McLean has 12 points (4+8) in that span.

- MINARD TRICKS THEM AGAIN - Chris Minard recorded his second hat trick of the season on January 2, notching three goals against the Syracuse Crunch in a 6-3 victory. He also posted a three-goal game on opening night, October 3, against the Hershey Bears.

Minard is the second player in team history to record multiple hat tricks in one season (Michel Ouellet, Dec. 11 & 31, 2004)

Minard enters Wednesday's action with 17 goals on the season, good for a tie for seventh place in the league. He has recorded 14 points (10+4) in his past 10 games, and carries a five-game scoring streak (7+2=9) into Wednesday's game against Lake Erie.

Minard also has goals in four straight games, one game shy of tying the team record of five, which has been accomplished seven times:

1. Tom Kostopoulos (11/2-11, 2001)

2. Kris Beech (2/7-15, 2003)

3. Matt Murley (3/19-29, 2003)

4. Tomas Surovy (10/8-24, 2003)

5. Michel Ouellet (12/5-15, 2005)

6. Erik Christensen (10/21-29, 2005)

7. Daniel Carcillo (11/29-12/9, 2006)

- KILLING TIME - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has stopped 41 of the past 45 power play attempts they have faced during their past 10 games (91.1%). The Pens now rank fifth in the league in penalty killing at 86.0% (153 of 178).
