Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell 2-1 to the Portland Pirates on Friday night in the first game of back-to-back contests at Cross Insurance Arena.

The Penguins (28-10-0-1) pushed hard late, but were ultimately unable to overcome a two-goal deficit they found themselves in early in the contest.

A tap-in goal at the side of the net by Brett Olson gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead just 1:57 into the first period.

Wade Megan put Portland up 2-0 with a sharp-angle snipe at 9:45 of the opening frame.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton got on the board thanks to a slap shot from Clark Seymour that beat Pirates goalie Mike McKenna 1:26 into the second period. Seymour's third goal of the season cut Portland's advantage to 2-1.

The Penguins outshot the Pirates 27-16 following Seymour's goal, but were unable to solve McKenna once more to tie the game. The 2-1 final marked the 13th-straight victory for the Pirates' netminder and first time this season the Penguins lost a game separated by only one goal.

Matt Murray was named the third star of the game, posting 27 saves. McKenna was deemed the game's first star with his 38 saves on 39 shots.

Neither team was able to score a power play goal during the three period of regulation. The Penguins failed to convert on three chances and the Pirates were held 0-for-2 on the man advantage.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton won't wait long for a chance to exact revenge on Portland, as the top two teams in the Atlantic Division face-off once again on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Cross Insurance Arena. Game time for the second of back-to-back meetings between the Pens and Pirates is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
