Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

LOWELL, MA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins put their two-game losing streak to bed, coming from behind to record a 3-2 win against the Lowell Devils on Wednesday night at the Tsongas Arena.

The win upped the Pens's record to 25-15-0-2 (52 points), while the Devils fell to 13-23-4-4, 34 points). The win also allowed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to gain ground on the Philadelphia Phantoms in the East Division standings, as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers downed Philadelphia, 3-0. The Penguins now sit six points behind the first place Phantoms with three games in hand.

It was the Devils who found the net first, as Benoit Mondou blazed down the right side of the ice and teed up a shot that deflected past John Curry at 14:51 for the only goal of the opening frame.

The Pens came out with guns blazing in the second period, at one point outshooting the home club 9-0. And all of those shots paid off when Kurtis McLean's wrister buzzed over Frank Doyle's right shoulder 13:18 into the middle stanza.

It looked like the second period would end in a tie, despite the Penguins out-shooting the Devils 15-3 in the waning seconds of the period. But Jason Ryzner picked up a loose puck behind the Pens' net, circled quickly and backhanded home a wraparound goal with 21.8 ticks left on the clock to give Lowell a one-goal cushion after 40 minutes.

But the game would turn the Penguins' way in a 42-second span midway through the third.

Mark Ardelan tied the game at 2-2, picking up Ben Lovejoy's errant shot behind the Lowell goal line and ricocheting the puck off Doyle's right skate and just into the net at 6:49.

On the very next shift, Joe Jensen picked up a loose puck in the slot and flipped his second of the season into the upper right corner of the goal, giving the Penguins their first lead of the night.

That was all the firepower the Pens would need against an outgunned Lowell squad which put just 14 shots on the board. Curry stopped 12 of those for his ninth victory of the season, while Doyle turned aside 31 in the loss.

The Penguins travel to Maine, where they will take on the Portland Pirates on Friday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

NOTES: Chris Blight made his Penguins debut in the game...Jensen has scored two goals for the Penguins this season - both have been game winners...The 14 shots against were the fewest allowed by the Penguins this season.
