Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ended a five-game skid and Brad Thiessen picked up his first shutout of the season with a 3-0 triumph over the Worcester Sharks at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Penguins needed just 40 seconds to break the scoreless tie as Benn Ferriero picked up a goal against his former team. Beau Bennett's wraparound attempt on the near post was stopped by goalie Harri Sateri, but Ferriero backhanded in the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

Riley Holzapfel made it 2-0 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 3:34 of the second period as he snapped a shot from the far circle that found the top right corner of the Worcester net.

Less than four minutes later, the Penguins extended their lead to three on a drive to the net by Eric Tangradi. Working toward the crease from the near corner of the Worcester zone, Tangradi had the puck slide off his stick, but Warren Peters was in position to squeeze his fifth of the year past the right side of Sateri.

That was more than enough offense for Thiessen, who made 30 saves for the shutout and his first regulation win of the year. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's penalty kill helped cause, going 5-for-5 in thec contest.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins close out the weekend in Connecticut with a matinee against the Whale on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 3:00PM. Individual seats for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com, and by calling 800-745-3000.
