Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.
LAST GAME... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans overcame a 3-0 sixth-inning deficit Thursday and rallied to surpass the Carolina Mudcats 5-4 at Five County Stadium. The Pelicans have won seven of their last eight games and are currently 4-1 on the road trip. Preston Beck produced a two-out, go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning to help lift the Pelicans to victory. The Pelicans have won 13 out of 16 matchups with the Muddies this season.
COMEBACK KIDS ... Four times in the last eight games the Pelicans have earned a substantial comeback win. Last Thursday, the Pelicans earned a 7-6 extra-inning win over Potomac despite being behind 6-0 entering the ninth inning. The following night the Pelicans entered the ninth down 2-1 and rallied to win 3-2. Tuesday against the Keys, the Pelicans fell behind 5-0 and entered the ninth down 8-3 before rallying to win it 10-8 in 10 innings. Yesterday, the Pelicans trailed 3-0 entering the sixth inning before rallying to earn a 5-4 series-evening win.
MUDCAT KILLER ... Infielder Joe Maloney has done serious damage against the Carolina Mudcats this season. In eight games with the Muddies, Maloney is batting .333 (10-for-30). On June 16 - the final game of the first half - Maloney hit a walk-off, two-run home run against the Mudcats at TicketReturn.com Field. Last night, he hit a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning.
UP NEXT ... The Pelicans are concluding their second to last regular season road trip of the season and are set to continue a three-game series with the Caorlina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. On the horizon is an eight-game, seven-day homestand beginning Saturday.
COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only current Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back-to-back postseasons. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.
