Pelicans Rally for Series-Evening Win

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (71-50, 31-21), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, rallied from 3-0 down to edge the Carolina Mudcats 5-4 Thursday at Five County Stadium. The Pelicans and Mudcats will play the rubber match Friday night in Zebulon, N.C.

Preston Beck delivered a two-out, go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning to plate Hanser Alberto, who started the two-out rally with a double.

The Pelicans entered the sixth inning down 3-0 but had several big two-out hits. Alberto had a two-run double in the sixth inning to tie the game 3-3. In the seventh inning Joe Maloney clubbed a two-out solo home run to give the Birds their first lead, 4-3.

Right-hander Michael Zouzalik (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen, allowing one unearned run on one hit over 2.1 innings. Ryan Harvey got the final six outs and earned his seventh save of the season. Josh Martin (0-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits over two innings.

Alberto finished 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and two runs knocked in. Royce Bolinger also turned in a multi-hit performance finishing 2-for-4.

In addition to nine walks, the Pelicans benefited from eight walks on the night.

Knuckleballer Kevin Pucetas started for the Pelicans and went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

The Pelicans mounted their fourth comeback win in the last eight games.

The Pelicans and Mudcats will play the series finale Friday at Five County Stadium. Right-hander Alec Asher (8-7, 3.30) will take on righty Joseph Colon (3-3, 3.55). First pitch is set for 7:15 with pregame coverage beginning at 7 p.m.
