Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, continued their second half surge with a 4-3 win over the Salem Red Sox in front of 3,114 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The win is the Pelicans second late comeback in three games and moves the team to 9-3 in the second half.
Down 2-1 after the top of the seventh, the Pelicans rallied against Salem starter Keith Couch for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Pelicans had two hits in the first six innings of the game, following up by putting four of the first five runners on base in the seventh. Brett Nicholas led off with a single before Christian Villanueva was hit by a pitch. Vin DiFazio then doubled in the tying run before Tomas Telis singled two batters later to score two more. It was 4-2 Myrtle Beach.
Salem tried a comeback of its own in the eighth, scoring a run on a groundout from Travis Shaw. The final score settled at 4-3.
The Pelicans got another outstanding pitching performance from Kyle Hendricks. It's his third consecutive start of at least eight innings. He went eight strong, allowing three runs on nine hits in his Carolina League best 13 quality starts, second most in the Minor Leagues.
DiFazio also had a great day, delivering a run scoring double in the comeback inning and a homerun to lead off the fifth inning, his third shot of the season. DiFazio has now reached safely in 14 of his last 22 plate appearances. Telis ended the game with two hits, extending his on base streak to 16 consecutive games.
Hendricks earned the win in the effort. The loss went to Couch and Joe Van Meter picked up his second save.
The Pelicans go for the three game sweep Tuesday at 7:05. The game is a celebration of Independence Eve, with the largest postgame fireworks show of the season following the game. Pelicans pitching coach Brad Holman will also perform his original song 'The Loyal Fan' postgame on the field. For tickets call 843-918-6000 or visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
