Pelicans Game Notes

July 22, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Barret Loux (8-4, 3.36) at RHP Ryohei Tanaka (6-3, 3.30)

DO WE HAVE TO GO': The Pelicans continued their stellar play at home this week, going 7-1 on a homestand what included a four-game sweep of the Salem Red Sox and a series win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Four of the seven victories were of the come-from-behind variety and three of those were extra-inning walk-offs. The Birds improved to 33-13 at BB&T Coastal Field, that mark is by far the best home record in the Carolina League. Kinston is 30-22 at Grainger Stadium, their strong .577 winning percentage is still 140 points behind Myrtle's mark of .717. The Pelicans have to hit the road this weekend for a set against the Frederick Keys, but the good news is that they come right back for a seven-game homestand with four against the Lynchburg Hillcats and three against the Winston-Salem Dash.

ONLY ONE HIT THIS TIME': Jared Bolden was held to merely one hit last night and lately that qualifies as shutting him down. The reigning Carolina League Player of the Week ran up a streak of eight straight contests with multiple hits before it was snapped last night. During the streak he was 21-for-39 (.538) with four homers, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored. Batting .247 on July 1, the Lynchburg, VA native has hit .476 (30-63) over his last 16 games to raise his average 53 points and soar to fourth on the Carolina League leaderboard, second among active players, with a .300 mark. Still riding a nine-game streak, Bolden goes for double digits tonight.

WHEN I WAS 17: It's been a very good year for Zach Zaneski. With a hit tonight, The All-Star Pelicans catcher can extend his Carolina League-leading hitting streak to 18 games. The Waterford, CT native has already moved past teammate Ryan Strausborger and Frederick's Miguel Abreu, who ran up 16-gamers earlier this year. Zaneski's run began when he went 2-for-10 while catching all 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. The former Rhode Island Ram is batting .308 (24-78) during this stretch and has raised his average to .302.

MILLS CUP PREVIEW': The Pelicans visit Harry Grove Stadium this weekend for three games with the Frederick Keys in a matchup of the Carolina League's two first-half division champions. Myrtle Beach clinched the Southern Division crown on the first half's final weekend with three straight wins over the Keys, who had already beaten out Wilmington for the Northern Division title. The two clubs' first-round playoff opponents have yet to be determined, but if they both with the first best-of-five series, it will be the Pelicans and Keys in the Mills Cup Championship Series to decide the 2011 Carolina League title.
