Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans look to avoid tying a season-long four-game losing streak in game two against the Potomac Nationals. The Potomac Nationals have taken seven of eleven meetings from the Pelicans.

Last night, the Pelicans were unable to support a tremendous outing by Chris Vines, who lasted 6.2 innings and allowed just four hits and two earned runs. The P-Nats plated three runs in the seventh inning, courtesy of an error, a wild pitch and a hit-by-pitch to jump ahead of the Pelicans. Potomac starter Justin Jones picked up the win in 6.0 stellar innings.

Reynoso: Returns to the mound on just four days of rest. In actuality, Reynoso returns to the mound after just two days of rest if you take into account his inning in the 2008 All-Star Game. In a career high 77.0 total innings, he has allowed 70 hits and 28 earned runs. He has posted a tremendous strikeout to walk ratio of 69:18. In his last start, 6/22 @ Lynchburg, he went 4.0 innings and allowed just four hits and two runs. After a string of three consecutive wins (5/26-6/6), Reynoso has not earned a win in his last three starts. Last season as a reliever in Rome, Reynoso only pitched in a total of 59.0 innings.

The Sun Valley, Idaho native was signed by the Braves on November 9, 2006. He played his college baseball at Boston College. In his first professional season, he was the closer for the Rome Braves. He secured a team-best nine saves in 40 total appearances.

Nunez: Making his 15th start of the season and fourth against the Pelicans. Picked up his first win of the season in his last start (6/18 against Winston Salem). In six innings, he allowed just four hits and one run. Overall, Nunez has compiled 63.2 total innings, surrendering 74 hits and 37 earned runs. The Carolina League is hitting .291 against him. Nunez has struggled on the road to a record of 1-5 with an ERA of 6.21. Early inning difficulties have plagued the right-hander. He has a first inning ERA of 5.14 (14.0 IP/8 ER) and a second inning ERA of 6.92 (13.0 IP/10 ER). In 14 total innings against the Pelicans, he has allowed 18 hits and seven earned runs.

The San Jose de las Matas, Dominican Republic native started his professional career as a free agent signee of the Los Angeles Dodgers. After three seasons in the Dodgers chain, he was signed by the Nationals in 2007. With the Hagerstown Suns last season, he went 4-6 with a 4.05 ERA.

NEW FRANCHISE ATTENDANCE RECORD: The 2008 California vs. Carolina League All-Star Game was a raging success at BB&T Coastal Field. A new franchise and ballpark record of 6,599 fans came out to enjoy all the festivities. The Pelicans eclipsed the previous attendance record of 6,339 set back on April 11th, which was the home-opener. The Carolina League defeated the California League by a final count of 3-1. Edgardo Baez of the Potomac Nationals was named the MVP, while Jake Arrieta took home the Bank of America Pitcher of the Game award. Prior to the game, Ernesto Mejia won the Carolina Cooling Home Run Derby title.

DEFENSIVE MISHAPS: The Pelicans have struggled as of late in the field. With 99 errors on the season, the Pelicans lead the Carolina League in that category. In the last 17 games, the Pelicans have committed 27 errors. The stretch includes a string of 12 straight games with at least one error (6/6-6/18). Travis Jones leads the Pelicans with 13 errors on the season, while Ernesto Mejia is second on the club with 12.

GORKYS HAS A FUTURE: Pelicans outfielder Gorkys Hernandez was named to the 2008 MLB Futures game to be played on July 13th at Yankee Stadium. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Futures Game. Hernandez will represent his native Venezuela on the World roster. Last season, he was selected to the Futures Game as a member of the Detroit Tigers organization.
