Myrtle Musings...

Nine Lives...Things were looking good for Myrtle Beach in the early going last night, but the momentum turned in Lynchburg's favor in the middle three frames as the Hillcats scored nine unanswered runs to turn Myrtle Beach's 4-1 lead into a 10-4 deficit by the time the dust had settled at the end of the sixth inning. Lynchburg picked up two runs in the bottom of the fourth, took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth while knocking starter Moises Hernandez from the game, and added three insurance runs in the sixth. Tripper Johnson hit a two-run homer (just his third of the year) in the fourth, Brad Corely snapped a 4-4 tie with a two-run double in the fifth, and in the sixth reliever Jorge Acosta issued four walks and three of those runners came around to score.

Play On, Player...Myrtle Beach 3B Eric Campbell is totally locked in right now, and the rest of the league has officially taken notice. Campbell was named Carolina League Player of the Week today, joining 1B Isaiah Ka'aihue and RHP James Parr as the only Pelicans to receive the honor this year. Campbell has hit .550 (11-20) in the first four games of the second half, and last night became just the 17th player in team history to hit two home runs in a game when he went yard with a two-run shot in the first and followed that with a solo blast off the scoreboard in left-center in the third. Campbell will also have a chance to enter the record books tonight, as a multi-hit game would be his record-tying sixth in a row while a run scored would mark the ninth straight contest in which he has crossed home plate, and that would set a new club record. Since his average fell to .165 after the first game of a double header June 13th, Campbell has hit in seven of eight games and has raised his average 82 points to .247 on the year.

Second in Command...The Pelicans have used six different players at second base this year, but Paul Bennett is starting to entrench himself at the position. Bennett is riding a season-high eight-game hitting streak offensively, and defensively hasn't committed an error since June 9th. The former Elon University star is hitting .281 (9-32) with four doubles over his streak, and is just three games from tying Isaiah Ka'aihue for the longest hitting streak by a Pelican this year.

Did You Know...Lynchburg's Pedro Powell stole three bases to pull ahead of Myrtle Beach's Quentin Davis in the league stolen base race last night, and is looking to become the first repeat stolen base leader since Jack Mitchell in 1952 and 1953.
