 Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Pelicans Game Notes for July 27

July 27, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WHAT HAPPENED WAS...: For the second straight night the Pelicans fell just short of the Winston-Salem Dash. Myrtle Beach faced an early deficit after the Dash went up 4-0 in the first three innings. The Pelicans chipped away and pulled within one in the top of the fourth. Randy Gress nearly tied the game with a long fly ball that Kent Gerst made a leaping catch on in front of the left field wall. Had it got by Gerst it would've likely plated the tying run from first, instead it ended the game as the Pelicans lost 4-3.

SULLIVAN: Richard Sullivan is on his third stint with the Pelicans this season. He began the year in Low-A Rome but was promoted to Myrtle Beach in early May. He has started 12 games with the Pelicans, five with the Rome Braves and three with Mississippi. He went 4-1 with a 3.72 ERA at Low-A, and in three starts at AA he's 0-1 with a 9.45 ERA. He is currently on a five game losing streak with the Pelicans and hasn't won a game since 5/27, a span of 10 starts which includes his AA outings. Sullivan has started only one game this year against the P-Nats. He went just 5.2 innings in that start on June 7 and he allowed two runs on five hits but didn't record a decision. MILONE: Tom Milone is coming off a five-inning start in which he allowed three runs on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out four in that start but didn't record a decision in the P-Nats 6-3 loss to Lynchburg. The lefty has gone seven innings in three of his last five starts. He has been tough to beat if he pitches past the fifth inning. When he has gone more than five innings in a start this year, Milone is 5-1 with three no-decisions. Tonight will be Milone's fourth start against the Pelicans. In three starts so far he is 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA against the Birds. He was nearly untouchable in two of those starts but they were sandwiched around his shortest start of the season. In his middle start of the three against the Pelicans he went just 1.1 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits.

FALLING DEEP: The Pelicans have now lost four of their last five ballgames. The team has fallen to a second half low two games under .500. The Pelicans still sit within striking distance of first at just 3.5 games back. Salem is currently being hosted by the Frederick Keys who are 14-15 in the second half while the Pelicans battle a second- half surging Potomac team that sits atop the Northern Division with a 20-10 second half record. IT WAS A GOOD RUN: Cole Miles snapped the longest hit streak of the season by a Pelican hitter by going 0-for-3 last night. Prior to the series finale with Winston-Salem, Cole had hit safely in 13 straight games. He hit .362 over the dozen games and scored 10 runs. He also had an on-base percentage of .436 over that stretch. That number was helped by the six walks that he drew. He raised his average from .249 to .265 over that stretch. BIRDS AND THE NATS: The Pelicans are 5-7 against Potomac this year. Myrtle Beach has hit fairly well against Potomac in the 12 meetings but the pitching has struggled. As a team the Birds are hitting .261 with a staff ERA of 5.73. Potomac has outdone the Pelicans in both categories. The Nationals have hit .298 in the team's meet- ings and have an ERA of 3.61. FRIENDLY FOE: Randy Gress has rejoined the Birds just in time. The infielder has hit .308 through four games against the P-Nats. He has also scored three runs. C.J. Lee has been the most productive among active Pelicans against Potomac. The speedy outfielder has hit .381 through seven games against the Nationals. He has also walked six times and swiped a base.

WELCOME BACK TOMMY: Tommy Palica rejoins the Pelicans from AA-Mississippi. Tommy had success with the M- Braves before getting reassigned back to Myrtle Beach. The left-handed reliever struggled in his first appearance out of the bullpen at AA but settled down quickly. He allowed three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings in his first ap- pearance but then went 7.1 innings of shutout ball and struck out eight while walking only two. His final numbers at AA were 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in seven games with 9 K's in 9 IP. Prior to his promotion Palica went 10.2 innings and allowed just one earned run that spanned 10 games. Over that stretch he allowed just five hits and his Oppo- nents BA lowered to just .252 down from .292. In 29 games with the Pelicans he is 3-1 with six saves and a 3.12 ERA. His ERA had dropped nearly a full run prior to his promotion.
