Pelicans Game Notes at Winston-Salem - 2 p.m. - Game 2 of 3

August 25, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.

LAST GAME... The Pelicans lost for the seventh time in their last eight games Saturday, falling 6-4 against the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark. For the second time in the last week, the Pelicans saw a two-run ninth-inning lead go by the wayside. Joey DeMichele cracked a two-out, game-winning grand slam off Ryan Harvey to secure the victory. The Pelicans entered the ninth inning leading Lynchburg 3-1 on Aug. 20 before losing 6-3.

OUT OF FIRST ... The Pelicans are more than a full game out of first place for the first time since June 27. The Pelicans are 1.5 games behind Salem with eight games remaining. If the Pelicans win the second half, they would host all three divisional games if neccessary.

STEADY EDDY ... Infielder Edwin Garcia recorded the final three outs of the ninth inning Friday against Salem. He is the first Pelicans position player to pitch this season. In his career he has now played every position except center field and catcher.

WHAT A RUN ... Since giving up three runs in the fifth inning on August 4, Alec Asher has not allowed an earned run in 20 straight innings. The run includes his last three starts which have lasted 19 total innings. Asher has won two consecutive Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors. Asher currently leads the league with 131 strikeouts and has a 3.02 earned run average, the seventh best in the league among qualifying starting pitchers. His nine wins is good for second on the team and third in the Carolina League.

UP NEXT ... After wrapping up an eight-game, seven-day homestand yesterday at TicketReturn.com Field the Pelicans continue a six-game road trip this afternoon against the Winston-Salem Dash. On Tuesday the Birds begin a three-game road series with the Blue Rocks.

COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only current Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back-to-back postseasons. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.

ON THE AIR ... All 140 Myrtle Beach Pelicans games in 2013 can be heard on Fox Sports Radio on the Grand Strand (AM 1050 and FM 101.9). Video for all 70 home games is available online at www.milb.tv.
