Pedro Fernandez Named Carolina League Pitcher of Theweek

Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks are pleased to announce that Pedro Fernandez was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for the period ranging from April 19-25. Fernandez went 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two starts to earn the Blue Rocks' first league-wide honor of the 2016 season.
Fernandez certainly deserved a win in his last start on Sunday. The righty went seven shutout frames against Potomac, only getting into real trouble once and that was in the seventh inning. He ended his start in style, striking out back-to-back batters with runners at the corners in what was a scoreless game at the time. Fernandez's seven innings are the most by any Blue Rocks starter on the season and his seven strikeouts tie him for second most by any Wilmington starter this year.
He did get the victory in his start earlier in the week at Frederick. That night Fernandez yielded just one run on four hits. He also fanned seven in only five frames.
The 21-year-old Dominican Republic native was promoted to Wilmington last season, where he lost six of his seven Advanced-A starts and made it through the fifth inning just once. In spite of the rough finish Baseball America still ranked him as Kansas City's No. 18 prospect coming into 2016, and Fernandez has not disappointed.
"Pedro learned from last year when he came to this league," said Blue Rocks manager Jamie Quirk. "He's matured as a pitcher and he's very confident in his stuff right now and he's been pitching great all year. The main thing is he has great confidence going and he has really good stuff. This kids loves pitching and I love watching this kid pitch."
