Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

(Durham, NC) - The Pawtucket Red Sox were swept in a doubleheader on Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham took the opener - which was the resumption of Friday night's rain-suspended game - by a 3-0 final and capped the evening with a 5-4 win in a seesaw affair.

The PawSox held a 4-3 lead after the top of the fourth inning of the nightcap but were unable to hold on. In the bottom of the fourth - immediately after Chris Dominguez had triggered a two-run rally to push Pawtucket ahead - the Bulls used two doubles and two Roenis Elias (6-4) walks to plate a pair and pull ahead.

Dominguez had given the Sox a 2-0 lead with a triple in the second inning of the Game Two against Durham starter Jamie Schultz. After J.P. Arencibia launched a home run in the bottomg of the second, the Bulls moved ahead in the third with a pair of run-scoring singles from Richie Shaffer and J.P. Arencibia.

Elias gutted his way through five innings in which he allowed five runs on eight hits with four walks. The PawSox leaned on their starter two nights after rain chased their starter after two outs and one evening after Eduardo Rodriguez had his start cut to three innings by rainfall.

Chandler Shepherd pitched a scoreless sixth in the nightcap for Pawtucket.

When play resumed in game one, Durham held a 2-0 lead. On Saturday afternoon, the Bulls received five scoreless innings from knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa (4-2) and added a solo home run from Richie Shaffer (7) to finish the shutout victory.

Gamboa permitted just two hits in while throwing the fourth through the eighth innings while striking out five. Danny Farquhar tossed a perfect ninth inning to finish a four-hit shutout for Durham.

Durham scored each of its runs with two outs in the bottom of the first on Friday against PawSox starter Eduardo Rodriguez (0-4). After a walk to Jaff Decker, Richie Shaffer smoked an RBI double off the centerfield fence. J.P. Arencibia followed with a single that scored Shaffer and made the score 2-0.

Bulls starter Austin Pruitt allowed two hits in three scoreless innings - singles by Chris Marrero and Dan Butler - before the rains came on Friday. Robby Scott threw three scoreless innings for Pawtucket when play resumed Saturday, while Austin Maddox allowed a run in two innings of work during his Triple-A debut.

The PawSox and Bulls complete the four-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Pawtucket right-hander William Cuevas (5-3, 3.59) is scheduled to make the start against Bulls southpaw Justin Marks (2-8, 4.54). Radio coverage begins on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network at 4:35 p.m.
