PawSox lose to Norfolk Tides 5-2

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - The PawSox were outlasted by the Norfolk Tides 5-2 in 15 innings at McCoy Stadium Friday night in front of a crowd of 7,410.

Pawtucket, looking to earn a series split with the Norfolk Tides, saw Clayton Mortensen make a spot start and he was excellent over four shutout innings. He would allow just two singles with one walk while striking out five.

Norfolk's starter, former #4 overall draft pick in the 2012 draft, Kevin Gausman was just as sharp tossing five scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out four.

PawSox reliever Jose De La Torre chipped in three scoreless innings allowing just a single while striking out two.

Pawtucket would mount a threat in the 7th loading the bases with nobody out after a pair of walks and a single. Ronald Bermudez would strike out for the first out before Jeremy Hazelbaker reached on a fielder's choice with an out being recorded at home. Jonathan Diaz had a chance with the bases still loaded with two out, but flied to right field to end the threat with the game still scoreless.

After a scoreless inning of relief by Alex Wilson in the 8th, the PawSox got a lead-off double by Xander Bogaerts to start the bottom half of the inning. A wild pitch moved him to third with no outs, but Will Middlebrooks and Mark Hamilton grounded out before Alex Hassan struck out to end the frame with Pawtucket coming up empty.

Chris Martin came in to pitch for the PawSox in the 9th and on the ninth pitch to lead-off hitter Yamaico Navarro, the shortstop slugged a solo homer to center field (#6) to give Norfolk a 1-0 lead.

Norfolk closer Adam Russell entered to try and convert the save, but walked Mitch Maier to start the inning. Dan Butler followed with a bloop single to left to put runners on the corners. Ronald Bermudez, previously 0-for-3 in the game, was down in the count 1-2 before singling to left to score Maier and tie the game. After a fly ball and a pop out, Bogaerts hit a rocket to center, but it was tracked to by Chris Dickerson to take the game to the 10th tied 1-1.

Martin started the 10th issuing one and two out walks before Anthony Carter was summoned for Pawtucket. Jason Pridie would line a two-out single to center field, but Bermudez fired home and cut down the runner trying to score to keep the game even 1-1.

Carter pitched flawlessly into the 13th retiring eight straight batters. With two outs in the 13th, Carter allowed a single to Pridie and walked Danny Valencia before Jonathan Schoop singled to center scoring Pridie giving the Tides a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 13th, Will Middlebrooks singled and stole second to start the frame against Manny Delcarmen. Mark Hamilton then drew a walk before Alex Hassan singled to right to score Middlebrooks and tie the game 2-2. With men at second and third, Mitch Maier lifted a fly ball to right, Hamilton tried to tag from third, but was thrown out at the plate for the second out. Alberto Rosario then struck out to take the game to the 14th tied 2-2.

PawSox position player Drew Sutton issued a pair of walks in the 14th, but struck out Yamaico Navarro to strand runners at second and third and keep the game tied. But, the Tides got to Sutton in the 15th as Jonathan Schoop blasted a two-run homer with one out to give Norfolk a 4-2 lead. After a pair of singles put runners on the corners Xavier Avery lifted a sacrifice fly to bring the eventual final tally of 5-2.

The PawSox will hit the road for a nine-game, nine day road trip to Buffalo and Syracuse beginning Saturday night at 7:05pm against the Bisons. Pawtucket will send righty Rubby De La Rosa (3-3, 4.23) to the hill against Thad Weber (5-4, 2.65) of Buffalo.

Pawtucket will return to McCoy Stadium Tuesday, August 13th for an eight-game homestand against Louisville and Buffalo.
