Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Syracuse, NY) - The Pawtucket Red Sox surrendered a run in five of the final six innings, allowing the Syracuse Chiefs to complete a comeback for a 5-4, 10-inning victory and a four-game series sweep at NBT Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The PawSox (11-12) took a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning, but the Chiefs (13-9) tied the game on Brian Goodwin's line-drive home run that led off bottom of the ninth against Wesley Wright. After Pawtucker reliever Kyle Martin (2-1) came in to retire the final three batters of the frame, Syracuse would string together a trio of hits to beat Martin and the Sox in the 10th.
Trea Turner and Scott Sizemore both singled with one out, setting up the two-out, walk-off single for Jason Martinson. Turner beat leftfielder Rusney Castillo's throw to the plate, delivering the Chiefs' second walk-off win in 48 hours.
The PawSox dropped their 10th consecutive contest at NBT Bank Stadium dating to last season.
Pawtucket starter Sean O'Sullivan pitched well, allowing two runs in a seven-inning outing, his third straight quality start. The righthander collected five strikeouts and one walk to improve his season totals to 32 strikeouts and five base-on-balls.
Behind O'Sullivan, the PawSox began building their early lead in the first inning. Blake Swihart recorded an RBI double and scored two batters later on a Castillo groundball that Turner could not handle at shortstop.
Pawtucket extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on Ryan LaMarre's two-out RBI double. LaMarre collected two hits on the afternoon to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
In the fifth inning, Castillo doubled and scored on a wild pitch when strike three to Jantzen Witte got away from Syracuse catcher Sam Runion.
The Chiefs began their comeback against O'Sullivan with an RBI groundout in both the fifth and sixth innings. They cut the lead to 4-3 in the eighth when Caleb Ramsey reached on a fielding error by Sean Coyle and Turner doubled him home.
Syracuse relievers Sam Runion, Erik Davis and Rafael Martin (1-1) combined to surrender just one run in six innings of relief.
The PawSox will continue on the road and open a three-game series at Lehigh Valley tomorrow at 7:05 pm. Righthander William Cuevas (2-1, 3.86) is scheduled to take the mound for Pawtucket. Radio coverage begins on WHJJ 920 AM and throughout the PawSox radio network at 6:35 p.m.
The PawSox will return to McCoy Stadium on Thursday for the first contest of a four-game homestand against the Rochester Red Wings. Good seats for all games in the series are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
